Course description

This course will allow participants to develop an understanding of the field of Social Entrepreneurship and Innovation, which is rapidly garnering attention around the world from policy makers, organizations and others. As the traditional lines blur between nonprofit enterprises, public services and business, it is critical that participants understand the opportunities and challenges in this new landscape.

The new millennium brought about a major shift in addressing challenges towards social change. The way companies operate demands a breath of fresh air – an economic sector that can offer solutions dreadfully needed to address economic, social and environmental challenges. Social entrepreneurship is a business model that includes undertaking business activities for achieving social cause.

This course provides participants with an orientation in this developing landscape, as well as with knowledge and skills to identify conducive factors for development and promotion of social entrepreneurship and institutional gaps. During the course, the participants will develop skills and abilities to create social change through social entrepreneurship. This is through increased knowledge of social entrepreneurship and its importance for social development and change as well as developing the participant’s own ability to act. The course is open to persons from various backgrounds seeking to better understand the concepts social entrepreneurship and innovation and develop skills in identifying development factors and institutional gaps. 

During the course, the participants will also develop skills and abilities to create social change by using economic/business models. They will transform their knowledge about theory and practice and will develop from novices to new and upcoming social entrepreneurs.

The course is divided into six modules:

Module 1, Introduction to Social Entrepreneurship and Innovation, cover the following topics:

  • Discuss and relate to literature, discourse and policy on social entrepreneurship and innovation
  • Understand the relation of social entrepreneurship to sustainable development
  • Intrapreneurship

 

Module 2, Social Entrepreneurship in Practice, cover the following topics:

  • Leadership and organization in Social Entrepreneurial organizations and partnerships: Management, strategy and communication
  • Network and support structures
  • Resource based theory and social capital
  • Community and Social Entrepreneurship

 

Module 3, Contemporary Social Entrepreneurship Practices, cover the following topics:

  • Learning from best practices in the region
  • Learning from global practices
  • Identifying potential
  • Replicating best practices

 

Module 4, Identifying Institutional Gaps, entails:

  • Identifying institutional gap and how can be exploited
  • Identifying social mission
  • Identifying institutional support

 

Module 5, Mapping of the Ecosystem for Social Entrepreneurship, entails:
  • Learning the five dimensions of the  social entrepreneurship ecosystem 
  • Identifying the actors in the social entrepreneurship ecosystem
  • Mapping the relevant actors for a particular idea
  • How to navigate through the social entrepreneurship ecosystem

 

Module 6, Social Change Through Business Activities, entails:
  • Building a business case
  • Choosing a business model
  • Developing a financial projection
  • Developing a financial plan
  • Strategizing
  • Developing a road map

Applying knowledge and understanding 

Upon completion of this course, participants will: 

  • Develop an understanding of the concepts ‘social entrepreneurship’ and ‘innovation’;
  • Critically reflect on social entrepreneurship as a concept;
  • Identify and assess the conducive factors for enabling environment toward development and promotion of social entrepreneurship;
  • Demonstrate knowledge and insight into how multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary knowledge can be innovated as social entrepreneurship and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR);
  • Show awareness and knowledge of their own leadership skills and the importance thereof in relation to innovation, development and entrepreneurship;
  • Demonstrate ability to follow and engage in current research on social entrepreneurship;
  • Demonstrate the ability to formulate innovative ideas based on theoretical assumptions, for example by formulating a concrete idea of how entrepreneurship can be used to create social change;
  • Demonstrate the ability to walk through the process from ideation to social enterprise.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to: 

  • Understand how the contemporary knowledge can be used for creation of social change;
  • Become aware of their leadership and creative abilities for innovation and entrepreneurship;
  • Make informed decisions on choice of a business model for their social enterprise;
  • Identify the social change they want to create through undertaking economic/busi ness activities;
  • Navigate through the social entrepreneurship ecosystem;
  • Strategize;
  • Create a business plan;
  • Create a financial projection and plan;
  • Develop a road map for success;
  • Become a social entrepreneur.

Forms of examination include

Module 1: Introduction to Social Entrepreneurship and Innovation

  • Written exercise. This includes presenting the findings at a seminar. Grade: fail/pass

 

Module 2: Social Entrepreneurship in Practice

  • Written exercise. This includes presenting the findings at a seminar. Grade: fail/pass

 

Module 3: Contemporary Social Entrepreneurship  Practices

  • Written exercise. This includes presenting the findings at a seminar. Grade: fail/pass

 

Module 4: Identifying Institutional Gaps

  • Written exercise. This includes presenting the findings at a seminar. Grade: fail/pass

 

Module 5: Mapping of the Ecosystem for Social Entrepreneurship

  • Written exercise. This includes presenting the findings at a seminar. Grade: fail/pass

 

Module 6: Social Change Through Business Activities

  • Written exercise. This includes presenting the findings at a seminar. Grade: fail/pass

Teaching methods include lectures, field trips, guest lectures, seminars and casework.
